CLUB HISTORY
Football in Talgarth can be traced back to the late 1800s, with photographic evidence showing competitive matches being played before the First World War.
Following the war, the club joined the Mid Wales League and, after league restructuring by the Football Association of Wales, competed in the Mid Wales section of the Welsh National League from the 1921/22 season until the outbreak of the Second World War.
After the war, records are limited, but the club is noted as members of the Mid Wales League (South) in 1947/48. In 1950/51, Talgarth joined the Brecon and District League, remaining until the club folded in 1962.
The club was reformed in 1969, again joining the Brecon and District League. This sparked one of the most successful periods in its history, highlighted by the 1971/72 season when the team went unbeaten in the league and won seven cup competitions. Continued success led to a place in the Mid Wales National League (North), where the club competed strongly before returning to the Mid Wales League (South) in 1983/84. They were crowned league champions in 1987/88 and lifted the Radnorshire Cup the following season.
The following decade brought mixed fortunes, and the club eventually folded in 1997/98.
In 2009, the club was revived as Talgarth Town, also launching a reserve team under the banner of Talgarth Rovers. Both teams joined the Mid Wales League (South). The Town later made a brief step up to the Mid Wales League (Second Division), but Rovers only lasted one solitary season before disbanding.
The first team returned to the Mid Wales League (South) at the start of the 2015/16 season and were crowned league champions in 2018/19. The following campaign was cut short when the Football Association of Wales suspended all domestic football due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
When competition resumed in 2020/21, Talgarth again competed in the Mid Wales League (South). After the league folded, they stepped up to the Mid Wales League (East) for the 2021/22 season, though the long-distance travel proved unsustainable. Facing the threat of closure, the club was handed a lifeline when accepted into the Gwent Central League (Division Two) in 2023/24, where they won the league and secured promotion. After one season in Division One, the reformed Mid Wales League (South) required Talgarth’s return at the start of the 2025/26 campaign.
The junior section was reformed in 2011, offering opportunities for children aged six to sixteen to play football. Players up to age eleven take part in non-competitive, festival-based football, while older age groups compete in the South Powys Junior League.
Although full records are limited, various league and cup successes have been recalled over the decades. The most recent highlight came in 2024/25, when the Under-14s were crowned South Powys League Champions and lifted the League Cup.
The junior section is at the heart of the club’s long-term vision, providing a pathway for young players to develop their skills, build confidence, and enjoy the game in a safe and supportive environment. It also helps to nurture a lifelong connection with football and the local community. Many of today’s senior players began their journey in the juniors, and the section continues to inspire the next generation to follow in their footsteps.
Talgarth Town Ladies were established in 2024 to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment for women of all ages to enjoy football. The team joined the South Wales Women’s and Girls League (Division Two) for the 2024/25 season and made an immediate impact, achieving promotion to Division One at the first attempt.
The creation of the ladies’ side has added a new dimension to the club, strengthening its identity as a community-based organisation that offers football for all. It provides a clear pathway for local girls progressing through the junior ranks, while also giving opportunities for those new to the game to take part in a friendly and supportive environment.
Beyond the results on the pitch, the team has helped to inspire the next generation, showing that football is truly a sport for everyone. Their presence has encouraged greater participation across the club, created new role models for young players, and reinforced the sense of unity between all sections of Talgarth Town.
From its earliest roots in the 19th century to its modern-day structure, Talgarth Town Football Club has always been about more than just football. Over the years, the club’s bar facilities have also grown, providing a welcoming social space for players, families, and supporters alike. Today, Talgarth Town is not only a home for football but a true hub for the local community - a place where people of all ages can belong, compete, and be inspired.
